Bike & Ride opens at beaverton transit center
On July 18th, TriMet's new 100-bike facility opened amid enthusiastic elected officials, advocates, community members and some pretty cute cookies.
The Bike & Ride Grand Opening drew a crowd, eager to listen as several speakers took the podium over the sounds of MAX trains and buses on a busy Monday morning.
TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane expressed his excitement about two new Bike & Ride facilities opening that day, the one at the Beaverton Transit center, and another in Gresham. He explained that these facilities were funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funds. By allowing cyclists to park their bikes in a safe and secure facility, McFarlane said, they will be relieving congestion on MAX trains, and providing a valuable service to the most biked-to transit center.
Beaverton's Mayor Denny Doyle said he was pleased to partner with TriMet on this project and emphasized Beaverton's commitment to increasing sustainable transportation options. Mayor Doyle even mentioned his hope to extend Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District's Fanno Creek Trail all the way to the Transit Center.
Bicycle Transportation Alliance Executive Director Rob Sadowsky said he looks forward to the day when this type of facility is incorportated into all transportation hubs. He emphasized the positive economic impact of new bike infrastructure, by creating construction jobs and easing the commute for local employees.
Beaverton's Bicycle Advisory Committee Chair Barabara Chapnick entered the cage and demonstrated the proper use of the overhead racks.
We look forward to watching the Bike & Ride help Beaverton residents and employees get around! |

Beaverton Bike & Ride: THE VIDEO
We met up with TriMet Transportation Planner, Colin Maher, to get the scoop on Beaverton Transit Center's new Bike and Ride facility, opening on July 18th. The BeavertonTransit Center is an excellent spot for a new bike facility, with a seemingly constant flow of bike traffic in and out of the Center, and its current bike racks and lockers almost always full.
Beaverton Transit Center has the highest number of riders arriving on bike than any other in the region. Due to bus, WES and MAX (Blue and Red Line) traffic, the Beaverton Transit Center sees 18,500 transit boardings per day. 12% of MAX passengers and 8% of WES passengers arrive to the Transit Center on bicycle.
While TriMet vehicles are equipped to carry bikes, this facility will allow people to leave their bikes in a secure area, protected from the elements. This will help reduce over-crowing of bikes on TriMet vehicles, while adding convenience to riders' trips.
This new Bike & Ride offers spots for 76 bikes in the enclosed area, as well as 24 spaces in the connected covered area. Cyclists can purchase a $20 BikeLink card through BikeLink (www.bikelink.org, 888-540-0546) or at Bike Gallery-Beaverton or the TriMet ticket office at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Once the card has been activated, it's used to access the bike cage at a cost of $0.03/hr. on weekdays (8am - 8pm) and $0.01/hr. on evenings and weekends.
Please join us at the Grand Opening of Beaverton Transit Center's Bike & Ride Facility on Monday, July 18th at 11 am! Bike Gallery will be offering free tune-ups and repair (parts not included).
Visit TriMet's website for more information on their Bike & Ride facilities.

it's official: BEaverton civic plan adopted!
The Beaverton City Council unanimously adopted the Beaverton Civic Plan on the evening of April 12, 2011. Thanks to thoughtful community input and the hard work of volunteers and team members, your ideas for Beaverton are now on their way to being implemented. This yearlong effort involving residents, business owners, property owners, and employers has resulted in a dynamic, coordinated set of strategies for the future of Beaverton. The Civic Plan serves as the City's set of tools and partnerships for bringing many of the most critical and immediate elements of the Beaverton Community Vision to life over the 20-year planning horizon.
"We are ready to get going on this," Mayor Denny Doyle said Tuesday. "I can't tell you how exciting this is."
