Get Back on Your Feet!

Walking is simple—the simplest alternative to driving for a short trip. All you need are comfortable shoes, a backpack for stuff, and in Oregon, an umbrella. It’s inexpensive, invigorating and zero-emissions travel. And more—you’ll notice the richness of your neighborhood that is only a blur through the windshield of a car.

Why choose active transportation?

Feet First for Fitness

A 125-pound person walking at a brisk pace for 30 minutes burns 150 calories; a 196-pound person burns 235 calories. Is the bus stop too close for your 30-minute walk? How far is the next bus stop? How far is the MAX station or carpool meeting-place? Now you’ll look at the distance to the bus stop in a whole new light!

The U.S. Surgeon General recommends that each of us gets 30 minutes of moderate activity most every day of the week to maintain good health.

  • Walk to work on pleasant back streets-you may be surprised how enjoyable a few miles can be
  • Walk to a farther transit stop
  • Walk to the carpool/vanpool meeting place
  • Walk to MAX
  • Count your steps using a pedometer—take 10,000 steps a day for fitness
  • And if you’re really excited, try speed walking or jogging.
