What we build and where we build impacts our health and communities.

WTA Annual Meeting
March 18, 2010

How does what we build and wheer we build influence transportation choices, opportunities for physical activity, fuel consumption and Green House Gas emissions? The Westside Transportation Alliance (WTA) will explore this question at our annual meeting on Thursday, March 18.

Featured speakers include Dr. Philip Wu, Pediatric Lead for Weight Management and Community Health at Kaiser Permanente, Washington County Commissioner Dick Schouten and Andy Cotugno, Metro Senior Policy Advisor. Geek Sheet
Tuesday, 09 June 2009 15:01

We come across all kinds of interesting info that is just too, well, geeky for the normal reader. But we have to share it with someone and that's YOU!

Yummy statistics

  • For every gallon of gas you do not burn, you save 20 lbs of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere.

  • Staying off the road two days a week means you've reduced carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 1,590 lbs per year.

  • By not driving, you save an estimated 40 cents per mile (fifteen cents of this is just fuel costs, figured at $3 a gallon and an average of 20 miles per gallon).

  • The average total cost of driving 15,000 miles per year is $7, 823 ($21.43 per day).

  • Americans who use transit spend a median of 19 minutes daily walking to and from transit (the Surgeon General recommends 30 minutes of daily physical activity).

  • Each kilometer walked is associated with a 4.8% reduction in the likelihood of obesity (each hour spent in a car is associated with a 6% increase in the likelihood of obesity).

We'll add more geeky treats as we find them!

What is a Bicycle Friendly Business?
Wednesday, 21 January 2009 13:52
A Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) is a corporation, organization, association, or nonprofit that actively promotes bicycling for transportation, recreation, exercise, and sport. A BFB practices social responsibility by weaving bicycling into the business culture and gives employees the opportunity to be active stewards of their personal and environmental health through bicycling.

The Bicycle Friendly Business program evaluates applicants’ efforts to promote bicycling in four primary areas: encouragement, education, engineering, and evaluation. Examples of these measures include:

Engineering

Safe cycling access; bike racks for employees and guests; showers and lockers for commuters and lunchtime riders.

Education

Bike-safety programs; mentorship for new commuters; and equipment tutorials.

Encouragement

Benefits for bike commuters; paid mileage for trips made by bike; loaner bikes for errands and short trips; and earn-a-bike programs.

Evaluation

An assessment of what’s already being done and what to aim for in the future; in-house bike coordinators; and target ridership numbers. This is also the section to highlight your business’s unique programs and policies that promote and celebrate bicycling—from loaner bikes for short trips and in-house spin classes to supporting charity rides and sponsoring bike-racing teams.
