TDM Week 2026: The Power of Transportation Options

Transportation is about more than getting from one place to another. Having real choices about how we get around can make it easier to get to work, connect with our communities, save money, and build healthier and more accessible places to live.

That’s what Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is all about and we're celebrating it during TDM Week, September 14–18.

This year’s national TDM Week theme, “The Power of Transportation Options,” highlights the many ways that giving people more choices can benefit individuals, employers, and entire communities. The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT), which organizes TDM Week, is encouraging organizations and individuals across the country to share stories, facts, and examples of transportation options in action.

What is TDM?

Transportation Demand Management is the practice of encouraging and supporting people to use a variety of transportation options instead of relying solely on driving alone.

Those options can look different for everyone. They might include:

  • 🚌 Riding public transit

  • 🚲 Biking or walking

  • 🚗 Carpooling or vanpooling

  • 🛴 Using shared mobility

  • 🏠 Working remotely when appropriate

  • 🚶 Combining multiple transportation options in a single trip

  • 💡 Simply having better information and resources to make an informed choice

TDM recognizes that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to transportation. Someone might take the bus every day, while another person might bike twice a week, carpool occasionally, or combine several options depending on the trip.

The goal isn't to tell people how they should travel. It's to make sure people have options in the first place.

Why transportation options matter

When people have more ways to get around, the benefits extend far beyond an individual commute. Transportation options can help people save money, reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicle trips, ease congestion, improve air quality, and make communities more connected and accessible.

For employers, transportation options can also make it easier for employees to get to work, expand the pool of people who can access a workplace, and support employee recruitment and retention.

For communities, every trip made by transit, bike, foot, carpool, vanpool, or another alternative to driving alone can contribute to a transportation system that works better for more people.

Celebrate TDM Week with us

During TDM Week, we’ll be highlighting the people, programs, partnerships, and everyday choices that make transportation options possible in our community.

We'll be sharing examples of TDM in action throughout the week and encouraging our partners, members, employers, and community members to join the conversation.

You can participate by:

  • Sharing a story about how a transportation option has made a difference for you, your employees, or your community members.

  • Highlighting a transit, biking, walking, carpool, vanpool, or shared mobility option in your community.

  • Sharing a transportation-related fact or success story.

  • Taking a photo of transportation options in action.

  • Encouraging your coworkers, employees, friends, or community members to try a different way of getting around.

Follow along and share your own stories using #TDMWeek.
