It's that time of year again. The days have gotten shorter, the rain has returned, and all of us are settling back into the familiar rhythm of fall and winter commuting. Whether you're already a seasoned traveler in wet weather or you're thinking about trying new commute options this season, a little planning and the right tools can make a big difference. At WTA, we want to help you stay safe, comfortable, and confident on every trip!
Gear up and stay visible
Whether you bike, walk, or roll to work, the right gear makes a big difference in comfort and safety. Bikers can benefit from bright outer layers, reflective accessories, fenders, and reliable front and rear lights. Walkers and rollers should focus on visibility too, with reflective clothing, lights, and bright colors to stay seen in low-light conditions. A helmet cover, warm gloves, a neck gaiter, and a good waterproof jacket or poncho can make early morning and evening trips more comfortable. You don't need top-of-the-line gear. Many commuters use affordable options or repurpose items they already have in their closet. For more tips on winter gear and safety, watch the recording from our February webinar, featuring Madi Carlson from The Street Trust.
Check your route and your timing
Winter weather can change quickly, so knowing your conditions before you go is key. For carpoolers, and vanpoolers, ODOT suggests checking real-time road conditions through TripCheck or by dialing 511. Transit riders should plan for a little extra time and occasional delays. We're big fans of the Transit app to stay on top of schedules and updates.
Winter commuting in Washington County doesn't have to be difficult. With the right preparation, visibility gear, flexible planning, and a positive mindset, you can keep your trip safe and steady all season long!
